10 affordable alternatives to the world's most expensive vacation destinations

Some trips — a stay in an overwater bungalow in the Maldives or an expedition cruise to Antarctica — are extraordinary. But many of those bucket-list destinations, celebrated for their over-the-top luxury or unforgettable natural wonders, are also plain old unaffordable.

Earlier this year, travel insurance provider Squaremouth released a report ranking the world's most expensive destinations, factoring in airfare, accommodations, rental cars, dining and average trip costs. No surprise: Greenland, French Polynesia and the Swiss Alps all landed near the top.
